9th birthday celebrated with giveaways

Local grocery store gives 27 prizes away to celebrate its birthday.

On Sunday afternoon (15 November) 100 hopefuls gathered outside Pick ‘n Pay Wilropark to see whether they’ve won the grand prize in a competition, a silver Datsun Go.

Given the shop is celebrating its ninth birthday this year, its management decided to give away 27 prizes, ranging from cell phones to LED televisions to the brand new vehicle. Once the 100 gathered at around 6pm, manager Michael Liontarides started eliminating hopefuls by using a bingo machine to draw 27 numbers and cross-referencing it with a list of the 100 finalists. Once 27 were picked out, five were set aside to win the grand prize and the others had to draw a ball with a number from a box, corresponding with a list of the other prizes. Some walked out with iPads, others with 50″ LED televisions and one with a brand new microwave. One woman, Gerda Moraitis, received a special envelope, upon opening it learning she had won a boat cruise for two to the Portuguese Islands outside Mozambique.

When it came time to establish the winner of the grand prize, the crowd held its breath. The women were each given an envelope with a Datsun key inside but only one would fit the vehicle and unlock the doors. After two attempted but failed to open the vehicle’s doors, the familiar unlocking sound affirmed to all that Gerda Swanepoel stood victorious.

Swanepoel told the Record she was shocked when it happened as it felt surreal, but she had prayed over the vehicle after entering the competition. Swanepoel has two daughters aged 33 and 31 and four grandchildren.

“This is the first thing I have ever won in my 55 years,” she said.

She’ll use the vehicle mainly for holidays and long road trips, but said first thing’s first — she needs to get it insured.
