Florida Police care for officers’ health

Florida Police take steps in raising awareness about regular health screenings.

It is of utmost importance to protect their community, but in order to do so the officers at Florida Police, among others, have to be fit.

This according to Captain Lydia Dikolomela and station spokesperson Sergeant Mpho More who organised a health awareness day for the station and the nearby Roodepoort Police Station on Monday 9 November. Partnering with the Department of Health, Capitec Bank, Assupol, Old Mutual, the Gym Company and the Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (Popcru) and South African Policing Union (Sapu) they reminded the police their own health is also important.

The police’s family and child safety unit and Florida CPF were invited to join in. Rose Legwale, the Department of Health’s operations manager in health promotion and events, was in charge of the various health screenings performed. They included blood pressure and blood sugar testing, prostate cancer testing (by way of drawing blood for laboratories to analyse), pap smears, breast examinations and HIV/ Aids and TB screenings. A team of 10 assisted the officers. Information pamphlets were made available.

“Fighting crime and chasing criminals, officers often are forgetful of their own health.

“This was a great awareness drive and might inspire them to keep conscious of their own health statuses,” Dikolomela said.
