#GiveUsReaVaya says students

A Wits student has started a petition to have bring the Rea Vaya bus to Roodepoort.

Mckinnley Mitchell, a second year student at the University of Witwatersrand (Wits), has started an online petition to bring Rea Vaya to Roodepoort.

The Rea Vaya bus route currently does not extend to the Roodepoort area.

“I have spoken to several Wits students who are struggling to get to varsity every day. All we want is for transportation to varsity to be readily accessible because it is expensive to buy a car,” said Mckinnley, Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy student.

Mckinnley has contacted the Rea Vaya Bus Service according to him, they told him if he reaches a certain amount of people to sign his petition, they will consider his request.

They did not, however, tell him how many people they want him to reach.

The proposed route expansions Mckinnley hopes Rea Vaya will include are:

• All the way down Ontdekkers Road with a station at Westgate mall. This route will go down to the corner of CR Swart and Ontdekkers Road.

• A route that continues further down Voortrekker Road, into Krugersdorp.

• A route connecting Westgate and Clearwater malls.

According to Mckinnley, the aims of these new routes are the following:

• Reduce the heavy traffic volumes on Ontdekkers Road during peak hours in the mornings and evenings.

• Make the lives of commuting students, scholars, pensioners and ordinary working class citizens more convenient, without compromising luxury!

• Make it easier for people to travel to the Westrand, which would speed up economic growth for small businesses in the area.

“My goal is to get 1 000 people to sign my petition. I know it may seem unreachable, however, I am just hoping for the best.”
