Ebenezer number one at Sports Day

The event in honour of International Mental Health Day.

Ebenezer Psychiatric Home came first place at the annual Sports Day event in honour of International Mental Health Day on Wednesday, 4 November.

The non-profit organisation (NPO) rehabilitates people with psychiatric illnesses and currently takes care of 23 psychiatrically ill adults. Some of them suffer from Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia.

The event which was held at the Roodepark Sports Club featured five other psychiatric homes in the area.

21 out of the 23 Ebenezer residents participated which included a woman at the age of about 70 as well as a physically disabled woman who had mumps on the day.

Some of the sporting activities Ebenezer participated in were duster hockey; towel volleyball; holy bottle and tug-of-war.

“It was a wonderful day despite the wind and the day was simply an opportunity for the various homes to unite as one,” said Kerry von Buddenbrock, Project Manager at Ebenezer Psychiatric home.

“Ebenezer, as always, were enthusiastic and in high spirits, to join in the celebrations in recognition of the mental health issues that are so often rejected.”

“We are ecstatic about our win and we done very well in the various activities,” she added.
