City Power official arrested for R1.4m cable theft

High-ranking official was specifically tasked with investigating cable theft and vandalism incidents.

A senior official of City Power appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of cable theft and stolen property.

According to LinkedIn the official, whose identity is known to the Record, held a high-ranking position and had the specific tasks of assessing the risk of cable theft and analysing cable theft and vandalism incidents. He was arrested last week in connection with an investigation on cable theft of four drum rolls worth R350 000 each.

City Power suspends accused cable thief official

Yesterday City Power spokesperson Hloni Motloung confirmed that the entity has suspended him until such time thaat the court proceedings are finalised.

City Power managing director Sicele Xulu was quoted saying, “City Power has a responsibility to its stakeholders, customers and ratepayers to ensure that it operates in accordance with stringent corporate governance standards.”

“As a law abiding corporate citizen, we respect the legal principle of being presumed innocent until proven guilty.”

Motloung said the company felt it prudent to suspend the accused from active employment to allow the investigation to proceed without interference. Xulu assured ratepayers that it is still business as usual and the arrest will have no bearing whatsoever on service delivery.

The accused will remain in custody while the case has been postponed to Wednesday, 11 November.
