Horison Blockwatch hosts a braai

Horison Blockwatch held a braai to celebrate their patrollers and their families.

The Horison Blockwatch hosted a braai to celebrate a momentous occasion.

They will now be using the premises of the Horison Pigeon Club as their headquarters.

The braai was also a way to thank the family and friends of the patrollers in their sustained support throughout the year.

With 54 patrollers providing 24 hour service in the neighbourhood of Horison, the blockwatches chairman Steve du Toit said their aim to be the eyes and ears of the police has been reached and they now have a positive relationship with law enforcement.

“The blockwatch was started about nine years ago by Gerhard Basson and his wife Michelle. They have done so much such as spending hours and hours building and promoting it up to where it currently is. Our goal is to assist the police because they unfortunately cannot be everywhere and don’t have the resources to do so,” said Basson.

To be a patroller, one has to be a member of the blockwatch then choose where they want to assist depending on how much time one has to spare.

Each patroller has a sophisticated two-way radio fitted with caller identification.

“The radio has a button which one can press and we’ll know immediately who needs assistance because it will display an address.

This makes responding that much faster and if the radio is stolen or lost then we can cut off it’s signal.

For the coming year, the blockwatch wants to work with neighbouring policing forums and blockwatches to reduce crime in the area.
