Meeting with a happy Halloween-twist

Happy Halloween from West Rand Toastmasters.

The West Rand Toastmasters did something a little different for their recent meeting, giving it a Halloween-twist.

According to one Toastmaster, Bruce Stewart, various traditions connected to the modern Halloween holiday are actually rooted in Scottish celebrations. Going by that thought he carefully devised a set of near-impossible traditional children’s games for the members to complete. They started off digging sweets out of a pan of flour using nothing but their mouths, each emerging with flour-smeared faces. Next, they had to eat doughnuts hung from strings at different heights with their arms behind their backs. Finally, they finished the activities by bobbing for apples.

“The old folk had the games in this order so that the children’s faces were washed clean during apple bobbing, they were very clever,” Stewart said.

The games didn’t stop once the members entered Florida Tennis Club’s hall for the meeting. The table was set complete with spooky decorations, a stick-on moustache for every member (including the women) and bubbles.

Kyle Champion and Malcolm Harris delivered the two speeches for the evening, titled ‘The realm of perspective’ and ‘Life rules’ respectively. Stewart presented the educational section. Later during the table topics session, Alwyn van Wyngaarden was asked, “What would you do if you found a spider in your car?”

His answer had everyone in stitches and won him the title for the evening.
