I am a 63 year old pensioner who has been trying to acquire a study bursary, in order to pursue my dream of completing a BA (English literature) degree. Due to financial circumstances I left school in standard 8 to work full time (Yes, there were white families at the height of the Apartheid era who struggled to make ends meet).
I completed my matric at the age of 42, but due to work and other commitments could never study further. I have a great love for the English language, and should I be fortunate enough to obtain sponsorship, I would like to pass on that knowledge to our children. I would also undertake to pay back the bursary if I do not pass my first year studies.
To the students who are exercising their democratic right to protest:- please act responsibly and without violence; you are our role models and future leaders, and you do not realise how lucky you are to be able to attend university in a democratic country.
I believe that my dream will also be realised, and that this country’s youth have the potential to be among the world’s best.
