How to beat the heat this summer

CoJ recommends you follow these steps for a cool-as-cucumber summer.

Seeing as Johannesburg is experiencing one of its hottest summers in years and given the recent heat wave, the City of Johannesburg (CoJ) has released 10 hot tips to cool down your summer.

Temperatures are expected to regularly touch the 35º C mark.

1. Drink water and stay hydrated. Other liquids such as energy drinks are acceptable, but water remains the best option. Luckily, Joburg’s tap water is rated among the best quality in the world, according to CoJ.

2. Keep the sweat away. Exchange tight clothing for loose-fitting, breathable clothing (like cotton) and apply anti-perspirant even at night before bed. If you venture outdoors, use an umbrella and wear a sun hat.

3. Avoid the oven and eat cool foods that do not require heating, such as salads, cold meat and cold soup. Enjoy cold treats like ice cream, popsicles and smoothies.

4. Continue exercising, but be cautious to over-exert yourself. Schedule workouts for the coolest times of the day.

5. Cool your room down without hiking your electricity bill: Open a few windows and allow air to circulate.

6. Ventilate your vehicle. Temperatures inside a vehicle that has been parked in the sun can be up to 10 degrees higher.

7. Get to know your body’s cooling points. Apply ice cubes wrapped in a towel to places like the wrist, neck, elbow or ankles to reduce your body heat faster.

8. Take special care with grandparents, youngsters and pets. Children and the elderly are most vulnerable in soaring temperatures. Do not leave them in a vehicle while shopping.

9. Remember your sun screen. When outdoors, apply lotion with a high SPF and wear a hat to protect your face and neck, even when in shade.

10. Watch out for the signs: Familiarise yourself with the symptoms of dehydration and overheating, such as muscle cramps, mild confusion and difficulty in breathing, weakness and sleep problems. Rest in a cool place, replenish your body with fluids and consult a doctor or pharmacist should symptoms persist.
