Petting Zoo has a new look

The Pet and Bird Farm will have a new look and feel.

Having a passion for animals prompted the current owner of the petting zoo at the Pet and Bird Farm to not only take over the farmyard, but to also give it a new clean look and feel.

Faeez Mamdoo and his wife Nawaal, has renamed the farmyard to Barnyard Buddies and has been spending all their time at the farmyard cleaning it up, fixing the fences and ensuring the animals are fed.

While walking inside the enclosures, just a hint of farm animals can be smelled. Faeez said he became involved with the Pet and Bird Farm after the current owner Glen Hatfield took over. “I took over the workshop area where the fish tanks are made and having a passion for animals, I decided to take over the farmyard as well.

“We have been spending all out time cleaning the place because it was in a total disgrace. I have also spend a lot of money buying more animals and have rescued animals as well,” Faeez said.

He added that he is well aware of the history surround the place, but “I will continue to make it a better place.”

Faeez has been in contact with various people in the animal business including the Roodepoort SPCA to ensure the changes are in accordance with the law. “Although I am still debating my options to how and what nature I want the business to be registered, I don’t want to do anything wrong. I have been doing a lot of homework and for the moment it will remain a facility where parents can bring their children and have a close-up view of the animals.”

He stated the animals are 100 per cent legal to have in enclosures and he is certain he does not need a licence. There are donkeys, bird species, monkeys, goats, emo’s and rabbits.

“My aim with Barnyard Buddies is to create a venue for people of all ages to see the beauty of these animals, feel them and educate them on animal care. Since I am still in the process of sorting a few things out, I am, in the meantime, want to make sure things are done right this time, I am getting advice from various professionals as well,” Faeez said.

He concluded by saying that Barnyard Buddies is separate from the coffee shop and Pet and Bird Farm.
