Joburg no longer ‘gangsters’ paradise’

Joburg no longer reigns as the worst city in the country in terms of crime.

By far the most interesting revelation with the recently-released national crime statistics is that Johannesburg is not the crime-ridden murder capital of South Africa.

In fact, according to Crime Stats SA, the Western Cape far outranks Gauteng, which has been given the derogatory name, ‘Gangsters’ Paradise’. In Mitchells Plain alone this year 21 313 crimes were committed, in Cape Town Central 17 994 crimes and in Joburg Central, in third place, 15 860.

A shocking 300 people were murdered in Nyanga in the Western Cape this year. On the top 10 list of worst precincts in terms of murder, seven of the 10 are located in the Western Cape, with Kwa-Zulu Natal and the Eastern Cape filling the other spots. Joburg does not feature. Crime Stats SA’s version differs from the crime statistics released by Police Minister Nathi Nhleko last week.

However, two Johannesburg police areas, Johannesburg Central and Honeydew, feature highly on the list of precincts with the highest number of reported crimes. On top of that four of the City of Johannesburg’s (CoJ’s) precincts — Booysens, Roodepoort Honeydew and Joburg CBD — reported the most cases of theft of cars, a total of 2 637.

Honeydew is second and Roodepoort fifth on the top 10 list of precincts with the highest number of residential burglaries in the country, with 1 815 and 1 302 crimes reported respectively.
