ANC march for a better South Africa

"The police protects us so we want them to know we support them and we are united as a community."

“Stop police killings and the availability of drugs,” were chanted as members the African National Congress (ANC) marched on Saturday (21 September).

The march which started the Roodepoort City Hall and ended at the Roodepoort Police Station, was held by Ward 84. The initiative was brought upon because of the rapid increase in criminal activities in the area such as women and child abuse as well as illegal mining.

Shouts of disapproval such as “Enough is enough” were screamed by the local community which followed with “Viva, ANC, Viva” could be heard from a protesting crowd.

A memorandum was handed over from the ANC to the Roodepoort Police stating the ANC stand behind the Roodepoort Police fully to deal with criminals. It also stipulates community members should expose perpetrators so they will be dealt with accordingly.

“The leadership by Gauteng lead by the ANC have been observing criminal activities, particularly police killings. We, as the community cannot fold our arms and pretend this [criminal activities] is not happening,” said Nonceba Molwele, Member of the Regional Executive Committe (REC) of the ANC.

She added, “The police protects us so we want them to know we support them and we are united as a community.”

ANC Councillor Willie Van Der Schyf said, “We are mobilising communities to join Community Policing Forum (CPF) structures so that they can assist the police.”
