OJC giving local women a chance

Operation Job Creation (OJC) has been working hard to empower women, giving them skills to fend for themselves.

The organizations Nomsa Malindisa, OJC CEO June van der Nat, Zine Luvuno and Social Work student Sarah De Matos Ala have been conducting workshops for women from poor and underprivileged backgrounds.

Located in the Roodepoort CBD, women have been attending the workshops.

From learning how to cook, cleaning, baking and making shoes, these women have been learning basic skills to provide for their families.

Malindisa said although this is the first time they have done such a project, she plans to have more to continue her assistance of women who need help.

“We want to empower the downtrodden so they don’t have to wait for handouts but survive with their own skills. Some have already been placed in working environments such as caregivers while others are in an FET College,” she said.

The workshops started in June this year after a long planning process to figure out what skills the women wanted to learn.

University of Johannesburg fourth year pupil De Matos Ala is currently doing her community project with OJC and has learned from the experience.

“This organization was the only one I saw wanted to make a difference in the community. I didn’t know how many people were struggling around me until I started getting involved,” she said.
