Cashbuild robbed second time in one month

Alleged it was same robbers.

Yesterday at about 4.30pm the Cashbuild store in President Street was robbed for the second time in one month.

According to store manager Jeffrey Khoza a man approached him with a hook and asked whether it came with a handle. The man’s companion was standing a distance away. Khoza said he had a gut feeling something was wrong. The man then proceeded to walk out of the store and when he got to the pay point Khoza confronted him wanting to know if he paid for the item.

It was then the man opened his jacket and showed his firearm.

“He said if I say anything or alarm anyone he will ‘bust my head off’,” said Khoza.

He then ordered Khoza to take him to the cash office where he had to open the safe at gunpoint. All the while other customers were unaware and continued their shopping.

Four suspects then fled with an undisclosed amount of money in a white Volvo.

Khoza said he recognised one of the suspects from a previous armed robbery at the store earlier this month.

According to Jan Botha of ISS, the company’s security company, he traced the Volvo’s number plate but found that it was that of a red Golf which was stolen in 2004. The number plate was also linked to other robberies, said Botha who was on the scene within five minutes.

Cashbuild are now in the process of upgrading their security.

No one was injured during the robbery.
