FLCC out in full force at river race
FLCC members were out in full force at the Klip River race last weekend.
Florida Lake Canoe Club (FLCC) members were out in full force as they participated in the 22km Klip River race.
Hosted by the Johannesburg Canoe Club based at Wemmer Pan, the race started from Meyerton Sportsgrounds to the Vaal river junction at Three Rivers.
“Even the dormant paddlers were back in training before the Fish River Canoe Marathon in October and there were a number of first time river racers hoping to earn enough points and qualification for the A grade river race,” said Gauteng Canoe Union’s Jennie Dallas.
The top finishing FLCC paddlers were Shaun Maphanga with junior U/12 Matthew van der Merwe from Charter House finishing in 1:36.
His father Chris van der Merwe and partner Kevin Hunt crossed 10 minutes later, and junior U/14 Jaydon Hunt with Vaughn Steven finished seconds behind them.
First time river paddler Renee Wright partnered with Emile Theunissen, both residents in Florida, finished in a time of 1:47 to earn her first river racing point.
Joseph McIntyre also finished his first race with Hardus Theunissen in 1:48, followed by Michael Benci and Ashlee Cramb also working hard to get her A grade race points, in 1:50.
