Groenewald finishes third at Classic

The star says confidence is the most important single factor in the game of golf.

Local golf star Coert Groenewald finished third in the recent CA Academy Classic at Wingate Park Country Club.

He was the first round leader and closed with a 71 to finish at nine under before Centurion golfer Jacques Kruyswijk took over the lead the following day.

The 26-year-old said confidence is the most important single factor in the game of golf.

“It’s the one thing all the leading players in the game have in common. There is only one way to get confidence and sustain it. You have to work at it constantly, but we lose sight of that sometimes in that constant battle to qualify, to make cuts and to make enough money to keep our cards,” he said.

Groenewald won the IGT Tour Race to Q-School at Wingate Park in December and graduated from the country’s premier developmental Tour with a fifth place ranking at the end 2014.

A month later, he finished in a tie for eighth at Qualifying School and packed his bags for the Sunshine Tour.
