Update: EFF warns, pastor calms at Roodepoort Primary

Parents and community members in Davidsonville were joined by a substantial group of Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) supporters who came to show their solidarity when buses arrived to take pupils to Lhufereng Primary.

This follows an incident at the school yesterday where the crowd was tear gassed and rubber bullets were fired at them by the police.

This morning went without incident but some EFF members warned that if the Education Department do not listen to the community they “will take action”. It is uncertain though whether this is the official sentiment of the party.

Before the crowd dispersed Pastor Leon Barendse and community leader Jerome Lottering thanked the EFF for their support but made a plea for peace and asked the EFF supporters not to politicise the issue.

“This is not a political issue. This is the Davidsonville community’s fight,” said Barendse.

Lottering aske the EFF members to take of their T-shirts.

All the community members the Record spoke to once again emphasized that it is not a race issue but about the fair appointment of a new principal.
