Video: Casual criminals rob house at leisure

Domestic worker tied.

A Helderkruin resident living in Koedoebessie Street, Shaun Govender is furious and slightly insulted by the audacity of robbers who left him nearly a quarter of a R1 000 000 poorer.

On 15 July at about 1pm three suspects armed with metal pipes and wooden sticks scaled his wall and casually walked past his two German Shepards. They then proceeded into the house where they tied the domestic worker up in the main bedroom. For the next two hours the three suspects walked around the house as if they were out window shopping and picked out the most expensive items to take with them including R5 000 worth of alcohol, expensive electronic appliances and precious expensive jewelry from the safe. According to Govender’s insurance company the cost of the stolen goods is close to R240 000. To add insult to injury he now also had to make more than R20 000’s security upgrades.

“When we moved in here 10 months ago we thought what a nice neighbourhood. Quiet and safe, but now this has become a high risk street. Since I was robbed four of my neighbours have been burgled, one of them twice,” said Govender.

But Govender who is a top cop in the Vaal has vowed to catch the criminals. He is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspects. Any information can be phoned through to Roodepoort Police Station using Case Number 367-07-15 as a reference.
