Euthanisation – a sensitive issue

Although angry residents slammed the Roodepoort SPCA about the way they euthanised dogs, their manager has explained why they do so.

The sensitive topic which sparked a social media debate surrounding the issue about dogs getting euthanised has been addressed by Mandy Cattanach from the Roodepoort SPCA.

Many upset residents have expressed their disgust with the Roodepoort SPCA as residents feel the SPCA is unfair when they humanely ‘kill’ dogs.

However, not all residents feel strongly opposed to the situation.

A Facebook user said, “The problem is the SPCA works with limited funds and they try their best to help where they can. Yet, they still get a bad name.”

A previous article by the Record stated the Roodepoort SPCA are financially struggling and Mandy said, “having to euthanise a dog is expensive which is why we do not do this out of free will.”

“We do not euthanise dogs unnecessarily and a lot of thought and discussions are formed before we make such an important decision,” she said.

She explained the last dog they had to euthanise had a brain injury and broken bones. “The dog was in a bad state and it was evident he was in immense pain so we had to do what was best to alleviate the dog from its suffering.”

“People need to understand making such a difficult decision is not pleasant for us and a lot of paper work has to be completed by more than one of our employees before we make a decision,” Mandy added.

Mandy also said after pets are euthanised, they are transported to Kya Sands where they are cremated.

She said she hopes people will understand when they euthanise dogs, they only do so if it is in the best interest of the dogs.
