[Emojis] Results: Who represents you as ratepayer?

Two weeks ago the Record posed the question, do residents know who represent them as ratepayers at the municipality?

The short answer is ward councillors but the long answer is, out of 37 people that partook in the survey, 13 per cent had no idea who their councillor is, 35 per cent didn’t know what ward they stay in and 41 per cent had never even spoken to a councillor before.

Nobody in Bergbron, Carenvale, Creswell Park, Delarey, Florida CBD, Hills, View or Glen, Grobler Park, Hamberg, Honey Hills, Lindhaven, Maraisburg, Ontdekkers Park, Paarderand, Princess, Rand Leases, Reefhaven, Roodepoort CBD, Roodepoort West, Selwyn, Unified, Wilro Park, Quellerina or Fleurhof even participated.

Of the 37 that did, most were from parts of Florida or Constantia Kloof and Kloofendal.

Most residents recognised the councillors Dave Dewes (35%) and Carl Mann (37%) out of the list of Region C’s councillors. Nobody recognised the names of Susan Stewart (DA, Ward 82), Jackie Matladi (DA, Wards 127 and 128), Zama Nkqayi (ANC, Ward 127) or Sebelo Ngcana (ANC, Ward 128).

most popular councillor
A surprising 62 per cent of people confirmed they have their councillor’s contact details. However, it seems having communication with their councillors did not help solve issues for 68 per cent of participants.

yes no answers
It took an average of a week to solve a municipal problem for 19 per cent of participants, two weeks for 8 per cent, a month for 2.7 per cent and two months for 8 per cent. However, 32 per cent of all issues logged by participants have to date not been solved.

Immediately resorting to calling their councillor was priority for 43 per cent while another 43 per cent said they’ll phone them as a last resort.

The Record will soon release detailed information on the wards and how to contact councillors.
