Old Bills’ Dinner enjoyed by all MOTHs

Their work includes the maintenance of cottage complexes nationally that are dedicated to serving needy comrades.

Last night (Wednesday 15 July) members of the Memorable Order of the Tin Hats (Moths) gathered from across the West Rand for the Old Bills’ Dinner at The Legend in Randfontein.

The Moths are a club of army veterans doing charity work in their community and caring for other veterans. The formal dinner is regarded the last meeting of the Moth social calendar for the year and includes the induction of the new ‘Bills’ that serve of the West Rand District Dugout’s (West Rand umbrella organisation’s) executive committee.

Those in attendance included members of the Roodepoort Moth Chilli Trench, to which the district’s chairman Jan du Bruyn belongs. He was re-elected as chairman at last night’s meeting. It was a great social gathering where Moths, their wives, the Mothwas (Memorable Order of the Tin Hats Women’s Association) and friends enjoyed a three-course dinner which included a carvery.

Attendees enjoyed the general humour of the Moths and the club traditions, including their way of speaking which comprises of a lot of army jargon. The Moths looked dashing in their formal dinner jackets, to which the new exco’s pins were pinned in an induction ritual.

During the meeting they also honoured their fallen comrades and sunset calls (members who have passed away) with a ritualistic rhyme; “They shall not grow old as we who are left to grow old, age shall not weary them, nor they years condemn, at the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.”
