FightRight with Rodney

The love and passion of Martial Arts has led Rodney Swanepoel to train in a variety of combat sports

A love and passion for martial arts led Rodney Swanepoel to train in combat sports such as karate, taichi, chikung, kickboxing, wrestling, muay thai, Greco-Roman wrestling and Brazilian ju jitsu.

The 38-year-old founder of Fight Right Mixed Martial Arts Gym in Little Falls started training when he was 10 years old.

“The term mixed martial arts (MMA) is used to describe a style that incorporates a variety of systems to make a complete whole. Our MMA classes consist of boxing, kicking, clinching, grappling, wrestling and weapons training. We offer a safe and secure environment for people to learn new skills or develop existing ones,” said Rodney.

He said that MMA training is not limited to the fit and strong; anyone willing to learn will benefit from joining his gym.

Besides adult classes, Rodney also teaches children at an intensity level suitable for them.

“The children usually are having so much fun they are not even aware of the skills they are acquiring. The focus of training for the children is to build confidence, strengthen developing muscles and improve coordination,” he said.

10-year-old Jordan Swanepoel, a blue belt, said one of the reasons he loves MMA is because he can learn to defend himself. He said he dreams of becoming an EFC (Extreme Fighting Championship) fighter.

“I can protect myself against bullies at school and others who want to harm me; plus it’s fun,” he said.

Eight-year-old Taylor Swanepoel, a green belt, said she loves the sport as it’s something she can do with her father Rodney.

“It’s also made me stronger and now I can beat up the boys who bother me,” she said.

The club, which has EFC fighters such as Terrence Griessel, Charlie Weyer and Juan Lubbe provides ironfit classes which are designed to strengthen the whole body.

“We use kettlebells, sand bags, the burn machine, climbing a robe, fitness drills, bungee cords and MMA strength and conditioning skills,” said Rodney.
