R96m to be spent on Region C roads in 2015/ 2016

In more good news for motorists in Roodepoort and Florida, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) set R96 million aside to spend on Region C roads in the next financial year.

Areas such as Weltevreden Park, Roodepoort, Ruimsig and Zandspruit will majorly benefit from the announced budget for 2015 and 2016.

The allocated funds will be used to further the JRA’s current projects in the area, including the rebuilding of two badly flood-damaged culverts, road resurfacing, road reconstruction and rehabilitation as well as their ongoing infrastructure maintenance programme, according to the Group Communication and Tourism Department’s recent press release.

Earlier this year, the Record reported that R25 million was being spent on fixing deteriorating roads in Region C which included 14 roads in Witpoortjie alone. The tender was awarded to KPG Surfacing and Civils CC in January and their workers are still visible in the area. They expect to complete their project in August.

According to member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport councillor Christine Walters, new and ongoing projects are not only expected to improve the general quality of roads across the region but will also help ease traffic congestion.

JRA’s acting managing director Mpho Kau in the press statement said around R75 million of the funds will be channeled towards the City’s extensive Gravel Roads Upgrade Programme.

The JRA will also continue with the rollout of 12 roads resurfacing, rehabilitation and reconstruction projects in Region C’s large 1 798km roads network.

Furthermore their work will include comprehensive street maintenance; the repairing, maintenance and installation of traffic signals and the installation of remote monitoring (CCTV) systems at key points, including crime hot spots.

In the recently-ended financial year, JRA reportedly fixed more than 45 000 potholes in the region against a target of 43 000. The agency also plans to clean 7 526 kerb inlets along main arterials during the winter months.

JRA spokesperson Bertha Scheepers committed to later detailing the full impact on Roodepoort and Florida roads to the Record.
