Card fraud on the rise in Florida

Four card fraud-related crimes assigned to an investigating officer after a crime spike in Florida shopping centers.

There are four cases of card fraud assigned to one investigating officer following a spike in related crimes.

According to Florida Police spokesperson Captain Lydia Dikolomelo card fraud spiked in June, with specific incidents reported to happen after hours at several hot spots. She identified the hot spots as shopping centres Flora Centre and Florida Junction, as well as the busy Goldman Street in CBD.

Dikolomelo shared the following police tips about ATM fraud and card fraud:

• Be vigilant; carefully scan the area for suspicious characters before you approach an ATM

• Do not be fooled by people who appear well-dressed and eloquent and offers to help you

• Fraudsters also often pose as custodians of the bank

• Refuse any assistance offered by any person at an ATM

• Don’t allow people to look over your shoulder or press any of the ATM keyboard’s keys while you are busy

• If you are remotely suspicious, postpone using the ATM until it is safe to do so

• If you suspect your card has been compromised, cancel it immediately

• Check the ATM for any attachments before you proceed; often criminals would position skimming devices or cameras to obtain your details

• If your card is not returned after the transaction, check the ATM slot for a strip of plastic often glued inside to trap your card

• Do not allow your card to be swiped through any device before or after your ATM transaction
