Syndicate strikes again

Third incident in one month.

It is believed a syndicate hijacking cigarette trucks is operating in the greater Roodepoort area with three incidents in less than a month.

On 28 May a British American Tobacco (Bat) company truck was hijacked in Mouton Road whereafter a wild shootout between the police and suspects ensued. The truck was found later close to Westgate shopping centre. A BMW and Fortuner was used by the suspects during the hijacking.

On Wednesday at 10am another Bat truck was hijacked near Westdene Dam by suspects in a BMW and Toyota Hilux. The modus operandi was the same as the Roodpoort incident with the hijackers driving to a nearby location and loading the cigarettes into their vehicles.

It was also reported on Tuesday that once again a Bat truck was hijacked in Honeydew by eight armed men in a Isuzu bakkie, a Corsa bakkie and an Audi. They forced the truck of the road and finally abandoned it in Cyprus Road after they looted it.

Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs confirmed the Honeydew incident.
