[VIDEO]: Brakes failed, three injured on William Nicol

At least three people were injured, including the truck driver, according to Metro Police on scene.

Yet another extensive and unnecessary accident occurred on William Nicol Road this afternoon (Tuesday 2 June) when a truck’s brakes failed, sending it flying down the steep hill before 11am.

ER 24 rescue medic Tyron Pieterse who responded to the scene confirmed their ambulances transported two patients to Life Flora Clinic nearby. Their patients only sustained minor injuries.

Vital Med EMS director Eric Nicholls confirmed they transported one patient that sustained minor injuries to Life Flora Clinic.

At least three vehicles and a Metro Police van were badly damaged when they were in the out-of-control truck’s way. One woman, Elize Jensen, saw the truck coming while driving uphill and told the Record she knew it was not going to stop. She swerved but her blue BMW was unfortunately still hit.

Jensen said by the time she saw the truck speeding towards her, it had already boarded the embankment between the lanes, the truck driver probably hoped to stop it that way. The truck did eventually come to a halt when it hit a street light pole where the road intersects with Constantia Drive.

Metro Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said, after the previous truck-related accident, “signs were put up to warn truck drivers not to go down that road.”

“Officers have been enforcing those signs’ commands, but officers were not on scene today to prevent this from happening.”

Minnaar said Metro Police will have to post more officers there on a more regular basis.

He arrived to the scene at 12.45pm and committed to giving the Record more detailed feedback after his inspection of the scene.
