So here I am, law abiding citizen. Living in a country where I am expected to pay Utilities, rates and taxes, traffic fines and tax. In return for this, we get load shedding, incorrect municipal accounts, pothole ridden roads to drive on.. and this: Filing a claim at the small claims court in Roodepoort will play out as follows:

You will call the court to enquire on the procedure. You will not be able to speak to anyone as the voice option is 1 – If you know the extension you require and 2 – for further assistance. Upon choosing 2 you will be redirected to the same voice options. No-one will answer your call and there is no general enquiry number.

Then when you go to the court yourself you are told that they only operate from 9am. When you return at 9am you will sit in a queue until 9:30am until someone arrives. This person will see one client and then leave the office and lock the door without a word to the people queuing in the hall. They will return after 15 minutes. This person will then be most unfriendly and have a “I don`t want to be here attitude”.

Then they will ask you why are you actually claiming and “why don`t you rather leave it?”. Once you finally get the documents you need nd have to return again to set a court date, you will sit in the queue again for at least an hour, get the same unfriendly clerk, and then you can proceed to actually attending the court hearing.

On the outcome of the hearing you need to visit the court office again the next day to collect your letter for execution. Upon arrival you are told that the commissioner hasn`t returned the files from the hearing and you have to come back again in two days’ time. When you return your file will still be missing.

So after giving them a weekend and another two  working days, when you return you will arrive after 10am to be told by the people in the queue that no-one has arrived and there is no-one to ask what is going on.Finally one of the people in the queue gets hold of a passer-by that looks like they work there.

Now you will hear that the clerk was asked to help out somewhere else for the day as there is “staff shortage”. The supervisor is also not there, he had to go somewhere else. So now the portion of my tax money that is allocated toward keeping the justice system in this country got me what? A total waste of time.

Who knows what lengths I would still need to go through to actually get my situation resolved. I challenge someone who is actually in charge at the Roodepoort magistrate court to respond to this letter and inform the law abiding citizens of Roodepoort that is actually going on there that we are treated this way.
