Shoplifters nabbed near Witpoortjie bottle store

Alleged shoplifters at one shopping centre were caught just outside another in Witpoortjie.

Four alleged shoplifters were nabbed by Roodepoort Police and the Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch (WSRNW) after stealing from grocery and clothing stores.

This afternoon (20 May) at about 2.20pm a crowd gathered outside a bottle store at the corner of Gregor Street and Generaal Pienaar Avenue. The commotion was about what residents believed to be a shoplifting incident at the bottle store, however, the suspects who were chased down by the WSRNW and Roodepoort Police allegedly stole from the Witpoortjie Shopping Centre on Mc Grath Avenue.

It is alleged that a man and two women stole household items including cheese and polish from Pick n Pay and two pairs of shoes from Pep in the same centre.

Another man drove their silver getaway vehicle.

Pick n Pay shop assistant Frans Keebine claimed he noticed them stealing from the centre and notified his store manager. The alleged thieves thought they got away but were caught up with on Gregor Street by WSRNW patrollers and the Roodepoort Police.

The suspects were taken back to the Witpoortjie Shopping Centre to process the happenings and for a case to be opened.

The Record will update the story as it develops.
