Golden Reef gives athletes great send off

The runners attended the event with family and friends who were there to give moral support.

Golden Reef Running Club legend and founding member Bill Brough fired up the spirits of members who will be participating in the Comrades Marathon.

The runners received their sponsored T-shirts bearing the clubs name.

Bill has participated in 21 Comrades Marathons since 1979 and shared his wealth of experience with those looking to cross the finish line.

“Participating in the Comrades Marathon is all about willpower. Once you pass a certain point during the race your brain starts with negative thoughts so the secret is to not think negatively. 70% of the run is in the mind. The rest is fitness. Overtraining is another mistake athletes tend to do. Resting is also a part of training,” said Bill.

The 73-year-old stopped running in 2000 due to health problems.

“When I was young I used to run at school as well as participate in rugby and hockey. Then when the club was formed, it was fun to run with the members and the camaraderie was amazing. It was just easy to participate in the Comrades Marathon and before you know it, you’re doing your 10th and then your 20th,” said Bill.
