From music to fashion

A local musician has a passion for design which turned into reality when she helped disadvantaged young girls with their matric dance dresses.

Jacqui Carpede, member of one of the most successful female bands in South Africa has decided to add designing to her growing list of talents.

The clothing design venture comes after the success of her debut album Ready to Love released last year as her band Jamali’s hiatus continued.

“The songs on the album are about love, friendships and past experiences which everybody can relate to. I was excited about the opportunity for the public to see what I can do aside from Jamali. The first single that was released off the album was Fade Away. The second single off the album was Buya,” said Jacqui.

She added that although her album was a success, the bands hiatus is still a bitter pill to swallow for fans.

“It was tough because they would ask me all the time when we’ll be recording together again and fans have a tough time accepting that the band is on a break. But the break has afforded me the time to concentrate on other projects that I could not do while in the band,” she said.

The Witpoortjie resident launched her Jacqui Collection earlier this year.

Together with her longtime stylist Irene Makhavhu, they focus on one of a kind designed evening dress, matric dance dresses, wedding dresses, bridesmaid’s dresses as well as cocktail dresses.

“The clothing I offer is affordable and elegant without affecting quality. The clothes are all custom made because very woman is shaped differently. The reason I chose to do the collection now is because the timing is perfect,” said Jacqui.

Her passion for designing turned into reality when she had to help disadvantaged young girls who could not afford their matric dance dresses.

She used her vast experience of red carpet events as a springboard to design elegant yet modern dresses.

Irene then puts her ideas into fruition. The collaboration between Jacqui and Irene is what make the collection unique.

Jacqui said her endeavour into design will not affect her music but will instead add growth to it.

“Designing is an extension of who I am as a person and will not affect how I make music. This is a way for my fans to get a Jacqui piece,” said Jacqui.
