Drumming prodigy sets stage alight

Rahil Singh, a drumming prodigy from Maragon Private Schools took home three trophies when he participated in the West Rand Music Festival earlier last week.

The festival, hosted at the NG Kerk in Florida Park had participants competing in a variety of musical genres including choir, drama and dance. Participants ranged from beginners to the more advanced.

Rahil won trophies for best in percussion, best in drums and the category for best beginner. What is special about Rahil is that he’s just six years old.

Rahil started playing drums when he was two years old after his parents bought him a drum kit.

He was just five when he had his debut drum solo performance at a Bollywood concert in Johannesburg.

Since then he has performed on various stages around the country including the Conference Speakers Showcase in Pretoria, the FNB Diwali Festival held at Gold Reef city theme park where he played to an audience of more than 3 000 and the conference for the Auditor General of South Africa where delegates from about 30 African countries were present.

Rahil is quite versatile and plays different genres of music with ease.

Some of the songs Rahil can play include Pharrel William’s Happy, Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, Justin Bieber’s Beauty and a Beat as well as One Direction’s Story of my life.

To nurture his talent, Rahil attends the Marlon Green Drum School and is being tutored by the man himself.

His mother Alesha Singh said Rahil has an excellent ear for music and he is always tapping his feet to the rhythm.

“In person he comes across as a very shy and reserved child, but when on stage or playing drums he is extremely confident. He is very passionate about drumming and music. Rahil is able to watch a video on television or listen to a song on radio and pick up the beat very quickly,” she said.
