The 25-year-old wants to stay anonymous owing to the fact that six of the suspects are still on the run. The young man, his girlfriend and her 14-year-old nephew were travelling from Florida towards Roodepoort when, at about 6pm, they stopped in the right hand lane behind the vehicle that was involved in the incident.
Two men approached the vehicle in front of them from the left hand side with car phone chargers in their hands.They walked around to the driver’s side while two more suspects came from the right hand side.
“The vehicle of the two woman’s windows were rolled down about 10cm. The two men started shouting at the driver to hand over their valuables and get out of the car,” he said. “One of the men shouted at us to look away. They seemed nervous. The one at the driver’s side pulled out a gun and then I realised I had to quickly get myself and my passengers out of the situation,” he said.
“I tried to get into the left hand lane and squeezed my car in between a Mercedes Benz and a Volvo. The Mercedes tried to ram into me and I then suspected that it was actually the suspects’ vehicle,” said the young man.
As he sped off him and his two passengers allegedly heard two shots and then two more. “I belief it came from the Mercedes,” said the traumatised eyewitness.
“When they tried to hijack the Volvo they shot twice but then the driver returned fire killing two of the suspects,” he alleged.
When the eyewitness returned to the scene after a while he assisted the paramedics who was trying to resucitate one of the suspects.
“I want people to be more vigilant. This happened in peak time traffic and the men appeared to be hawkers. Do not trust anyone is my message to fellow motorists,” he concluded.
By the time of publication the police has not yet commented on wheteher the driver of the Volvo was arrested anf if he will be charged.
