Trains collide in Metrorail simulation

Florida Metrorail station had a collision simulation to test their readiness.

Chaos ensued at the Florida Metrorail station earlier this week when two trains collided.

Police were on the scene cordoning off the area and keeping bystanders at bay.

Various emergency services were immediately on the scene.

They were dividing patients based on those who had moderate injuries and those seriously injured.

Metrorail officials from different departments were on the phone relaying messages to their command centre on the progress of the incident.

This was an exercise Metrorail organised to test the readiness of the station if an accident of such magnitude would occur.

“We always need to be prepared when an incident of this nature occurs. Today was an exercise to see how quickly we can respond to the situation so that lives can be saved in an efficient manner because time is crucial,” said Metrorail Gauteng Content and Stakeholder manager Tony Games.

Officials from the City of Johannesburg Disaster Management, Fire and Medical services and emergency services such as Netcare 911, ER24 and Quick Response were in attendance.

“Protecting the scene and attending to injuries is very important, we need to monitor the injured and transport them to various hospital immediately. We deal with people in our line of business so we always need to be prepared for any eventuality,” said Tony.

After the simulation, the departments were briefed on how the exercise went and where they need to improve their services.

Communication was one of the important factors highlighted in the briefing.
