Zone 5 ANC to walk against xenophobia

The ANC in Zone 5 and the ANC Youth League are organizing a walk in solidarity Against Xenophobia on Saturday.

The walk will start at Ruimsig Informal Settlement and onto Hendrik Potgieter Road.

“We want to send a strong message to the community, country and Africa as a whole that we condemn all xenophobic attacks. We want to teach our community and children that we are who we are today because of others. During the apartheid struggle, we received help from these African countries and we have freedom in this country because of their assistance,” said Zone 5 ANC chairperson Phosane Mngqibisa.

The walk is targeting the informal settlements where foreigners own businesses and live.

The ANC has also invited Congo, Nigerian and Somali representatives to participate in the walk.

Community members from all Region C wards including Witpoortjie, Helderkruin and Matholesville are invited.

“We chose to start the walk at an informal settlement because foreign nationals own businesses there and live amongst us so we want to send a strong message to the community that we will not tolerate these attacks. They deserve the same benefits as enshrined in our constitution and for the community not to take the law into their hands,” said Phosana.
