Residents of Vuurlelie Avenue and the adjoining streets gathered for a community braai on 14 March as part of a Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) initiative.
The RNW aims to reduce crime by inspiring neighbours to know and look out for one another. In a day where neighbours hide too easily behind high walls and electric fences, the RNW aimed through this community braai help to build bridges and create a sense of unity, says member Deidré Tholet. Through a WhatsApp group (88 members at this stage), neighbours keep each other up to date on various security issues, from ‘in-the-moment’ situation reports on crime to the load-shedding schedule.
Through a close partnership with the SAPS and private security companies crime has been reduced from four incidents a day in some areas, to only one or fewer incidents a week.
The braai was enjoyed by all, with an impromptu Easter Egg hunt being set up for the children, and wors rolls shared with members of the local patrol units. According to Tholet camping chairs, gazebos and braais were set up on the street, creating a festive atmosphere, as well as making a statement to the passers-by — “We live here and we are looking after our streets”.
