Proteas humbled at MCG

South Africa get a cricket lesson from India in ICC cricket world cup pool B match

The Proteas were humbled in front of an 86000 strong crowd by India at the Melbourne Cricket Grounds (MCG) this weekend.

South Africa was set a target of 307 after a superb century from Melbourne resident Shikhar Dhawan which anchored century plus partnerships with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane.

In the field, the Proteas dropped three catches, including a chance to Hashim Amla at backward point that saved Dhawan on 53 runs. Seamer Vernon Philander also suffered a hamstring injury after bowling four overs.

In reply, the South Africans faltered with captain AB de Villiers run out for 30 runs. This ended a 68-run partnership with Faf Du Plessis.

Faf did not hang around either after raising his half-century, falling cheaply for 55 runs. JP Duminy and David Miller followed quickly for six and 22 runs respectively.

It was India’s first win against South Africa at the World Cup after three previous losses.

The loss puts South Africa on fifth position in pool B above the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan who are yet to register victories.
