Records tumbled at this weeks Roodepoort Championships that were held at the Roodepoort Athletics Stadium.

With more than 700 athletes from 24 primary schools in the West Rand participating in the blazing heat, five records were beaten.
The Hoërskool Florida sponsored event had 88 various track and field competitions on display including long jump and javelin.

Laerskool Roodekrans’ Dané Roets left fellow competitors and spectators in awe as she claimed three of the records in javelin, shot-put and discus.
The 13-year-old kicked off her march by beating the old javelin record of 30.18 m and posted a new record of 32.62m. It was then off to the girls U/13 shot-put where she smashed the old record of 11.35m by more than a metre at and now her record stand at 12.50m. Her final event ended no differently as she broke the previous discus record of 33.58m by posting a new record of 34.40m.

Dané was not the only one breaking records as Laerskool Florida’s Matthew Jacobs joined in the fun. In the boys U/13, he beat the old record of 1.63m and posted a new record of 1.66m. Matthew also placed first in the 80m and 200m hurdles.

In the girls U/12 javelin, Laerskool Roodekrans’ Lee-Challe Kriel posted a 23.27m, beating the old record of 23.11m.

The top athletes from each of the various events will compete in the District 12 schools event, which is followed by the Gauteng and South African Championships.
