Illegal dumping caught on camera

Do you know this bakkie?

A resident, Raymond Mothlabane was out jogging this morning when he spotted a culprit busy dumping illegally in Lindhaven.

The incident took place in the veld on the corner of Rothchild and Reitz Street.

“He was dumping what looked like shredded paper. This happened this morning at around 6am. It looks like he collects his employees at the same corner daily. The guys were waiting for him at the corner and after assisting him to offload they jumped in the back and he drove off,” Mothlabane said.

Wayne Minnaar spokesperson for JMPD, who enforces by-laws says the fines for illegal dumping is divided into three categories.

For small litter such as bottles, paper and cardboard a R500 fine is applicable, for a bakkie load a R1000 fine and for building rubble a R1500 fine will be issued.

“The problem is that people dump when there is no one around therefor we rely on the community to report illegal dumping,” says Minnaar.

Illegal dumping can be reported to the Director of JMPD bylaws, Sam Sethagu on 011 490 1630 or at samse@joburg.org.za
