Church spoils children at Dorah’s Ark

Underprivileged children's faces lit up as they received gift packages at a recent Christmas party.

Last weekend the Roodepoort Baptist Church spoiled underprivileged children that stay at or regularly visit Siyabonga Dorah’s Ark in the CBD.

As many as 58 gift boxes were distributed to the children, each containing toiletries and necessities such as a facecloth, body lotion, toothpaste, a toothbrush, a roll of toilet paper, roll-on antiperspirant and soap. Before the gifts were handed out, members of the RBC prepared and distributed a hearty lunch of hot dogs and cold beverages.

“This is not a once-off event that we’re having at Dorah’s Ark,” church deacon Bheki Tshabang told the record.

“Rather, we consider this our adoption of the organisation, the start of a beautiful partnership.”

The idea to treat children at the haven came about when the church’s Sunday school teachers decided it would be a good lesson in charity for fortunate children that attend church.

“These children have more than they can ask for, it is important that they learn to give as often as they receive,” said one of the teachers, Freda Walters.

Additional gifts of toys from Toys ‘R Us were donated to the church for the event by FNB Industria.

Mama Dorah, that started Dorah’s Ark in 1997, expressed her gratitude for the church’s contributions during the festive season.

“I’ve often asked myself whether I am doing enough for these children, whether they know how much I love them,” she told the record.

“Look how far I’ve come, however, and how I am surrounded by angels.”

“We are looking forward to extending a helping hand to the organisation on a quarterly basis,” Tshabang concluded.
