UK man looking for his birth mother

His single, 18-year-old mother gave birth to him in 1951 and might still be living in Roodepoort or Florida.

Francis Lowe, 63, who lives in the United Kingdom is looking for his birth mother.

Lowe was born Peter Weideman to his mother Estelle Weideman (maiden name) in the Hannie Botha Maternity Home in 4th Avenue, Florida on 20 December 1951. He was presented for adoption immediately after his birth, Lowe said.

As a premature baby, Lowe was cared for by Sister Molly Lowe who was the matron of the Carisbrooke Nursing Home at 106 Shamrock Street in Unified, Florida at the time.

“She was well-known and respected in her community,” Lowe told the record.

He was later adopted by Sister Lowe and her husband, renamed Francis Walter Lowe and lived at 80 Rose Street, Florida. Francis (Frank) was educated at St Catherine’s Convent and later emigrated to the UK with his adoptive parents where they settled in Nottingham, England.

“I have been searching for six years now in the hope that someone somewhere will help me find my mother,” Lowe said.

“My mother was an 18-year-old single girl at the time of my birth.

“If she is still alive, she will be 80 years old today and most likely will live in an old age home or retirement village in Roodepoort or Florida,” he said.

“The only other information I have of her is that her father was born in Graaf-Reinett in the Cape and that he married a McKay woman.

“She was one of 12 children.”

Anyone with any further information on the whereabouts of Estelle Weideman can contact Lowe via email at francis.lowe1@hotmail.co.uk.
