Home is where your heart is

Five years ago, I left the Witpoortjie office, all starry eyed and bushy tailed to spread my wings, explore new avenues and face new challenges.

At that time, I moved to Lydenburg, a small rural town in Mpumalanga with a rich history where I visited some of the many tourist attractions such as Pilgrim’s Rest, the Mac Mac falls, the beautiful and quint town in Dullstroom as well as God’s Window and the Pinnacle.

I remember the year it snowed in the areas surrounding Lydenburg. I drove all the way to Dullstroom to take pictures and make my very own snow angel. One event I deleted from my bucket list.

God’s Window and the Pinnacle are breathtakingly beautiful and I even attempted the zip line in Graskop where the Big Swing is. It was terrifying but fun at the same time.

I then moved on to Limpopo where I stayed in Tzaneen. Another beautiful town with a rich history. Tzaneen is home to many agricultural holdings where banana trees literally grow in your back yard. Nut produce is also fairly big in that area. The Debengeni Waterfalls, on the way to Polokwane on the Magoebaskloof Pass is the perfect picnic spot for families, but the waterfalls in Duiwelskloof is just as stunning.

I then moved to Letsitele, another small farming community about 25km outside Tzaneen on the way to Phalaborwa. It is there that I realised how peaceful and slow-paced farm life is. Apart from the scorching hot weather, snakes are abundant and you must always be on your guard, especially walking outside at night.

To sum it all up, in my lifetime, I’ve lived in five provinces. That includes Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga, Limpopo and Northern Cape, but home has always been the West Rand. This is where I grew up, where I completed my matric at Monument High School and this is where my heart is. Hence the fact that I am back.

I shared a joke with one of my friends the other day. Almost every time she sees me, I’m living in another province. But I’m back and here to stay.

If you still remember me, come say hallo. If you don’t, I would like to meet you anyway.
