South Africa is one of the countries with the highest rates of transport-related fatalities in the world and with the holiday season around the corner it is fitting to raise awareness.

In the spirit of the United Nations (UN) ‘Decade of action for road safety’ and in light of the UN’s resolution 68/269 entitled Improving Global Road Safety that was adopted in April this year, Roodepoort will experience one of the biggest road safety awareness events titled the Iron Horse Road Safety Carnival on Saturday 11 October at HoĆ«rskool Florida.

Netcare 911 will be present and will be doing a number of demonstrations. The Kaizer Chiefs Soccer franchise will be present in support of our cause, as will the organisation Think Bike and the Sopranos Biking Club. We are pleased to confirm that Miss South Africa 2010 will be our guest together with other invited celebrities,” says Strydom.

Over and above the motorcycle procession there will be various speakers ā€“ also from government ā€“ entertainment for the children and the family, music and a band, an opportunity to meet celebrities and have photographs taken with them, as well as a road-safety fashion parade. There also will be a motor vehicle/motorcycle/cycle/pedestrian collision rescue demonstration, a Mr and Mrs Iron Horse Road Safety competition and various exhibitions and displays.

  1. Here comes a highveld storm of a different type – they call it “rolling thunder”. These motorcycle riders will be sending a loud message that road users have a duty to be considerate to one-another and must use our roads responsibly. Road safety is everyones business. Reckless driving and disregard for the rules of the road is unacceptable and perpetrators must be punished! We need far more visible policing on our roads – traffic police must act against wrongdoers and not be intimidated by anyone! To many people are injured on our roads and even die. This must be stopped !!!
