SA Crime Stats: murder and violent crime on the increase

SA is becoming more violent.

Murder and violent crimes are on the increase.

This was stated by Minister of Police Nkosinathi Nhleko on Friday (19 September) at the police training college in Pretoria.

While violent crime has increased (murder with five per cent), rape and sexual crimes have decreased. The five-year trend shows that crime in general has decreased but violent crime in the past year has increased, according to Nhleko.

A major concern though is that drug-related crimes have increased by 26,1 per cent in the past year and 210 per cent over the past 10 years.

Nhleko also revealed that currently there are 193 000 police officers, which relates to approximately one officer for every 346 citizens.

A breakdown of Roodepoort’s crime stats will follow soon.
