Roundtable 162 lends a helping hand

Years of experience made the team a well-oiled machine.

The Roundtable Roodepoort 162 recently hosted an astonishing breakfast stall at the annual Firlands Children’s Home Fundraising Fete.

Roundtable members worked hard to sell breakfast rolls, hamburgers and boerewors rolls amid the day’s musical performances, stage performances and children’s entertainment.

Years of experience made the team a well-oiled machine as they cooked and served their food from the start of the event until lunch time.

Within the international mission of The Salvation Army, Firlands Children’s Home provides a secure, caring and loving home environment within which the children’s need for healing from past hurts is addressed and where a spirit of hope for the future is encouraged and nurtured.

The children cared for at the home come from all walks of life and socioeconomic backgrounds. Many come from broken homes and often have been exposed to abuse and violence. All of these children have suffered emotional trauma and need a loving and caring environment in which to live.

The children are placed at Firlands by the courts. The home therefore is required to meet the minimum standards set by the Department of Social Development. However, the state covers less than 40 per cent of the costs of running the home. The balance relies on donations and fund raising projects.

On the day Roundtable Roodepoort 162 helped to raise a total of R16 000 for Firland.
