Help start Florida’s own food forest

Starting community gardens in Florida could really be to the benefit of residents, says Ilet Jonker.

Her love of gardening has inspired Ilet Jonker, co-founder of the Florida Community Market, to extend her dream of a changed community by starting food forests.

Jonker’s ultimate dream is to inspire her own neighbourhood of Florida and its surroundings to work together and start a community garden.

“We have huge spaces in the parks, why can’t we utilise them for food forests?

“If everyone puts in a little time they’ll be allowed to take the fruits thereof – there are many thriving community gardens that work on this principle.

“The surplus vegetables could go to the needy or be sold at markets to pay for the upkeep of the food forests.”

Her food forest idea would feed through to the Community Market, where residents then can exchange their fruits, vegetables, herbs and seeds amongst each other. She is available for any further information on the Johannesburg Talent Exchange, the market and her aspiration of a local food forest or two.
