Le Clos ready for Commonwealth Games challenge

Le Clos is hoping to do better than the 2010 Delhi Games where he won five medals.

South African swimmer Chad Le Clos says he is looking forward to representing the country in the Commonwealth Games, with the squad having departed for Scotland on Wednesday.

Le Clos won five medals in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi and says South African swimmers will have to give their all against competition from Britain, Australia, and Canada.

Le Clos believes this will be a good test for South African swimmers two years before the next Olympics.

“Well, I think there’s a lot of youngsters coming through in the world of swimming. It’s always a good gauge to see two years away from the Olympics where you stand in the Commonwealth,” said Le Clos.

“Obviously, it’s not quite like the Olympic Games or the World Champs where it’s the best in the world. It’s still going be tough having the Aussies, and the Brits, the Canadians there. So, I think also a lot of challenges will come from South Africans. It will be almost three guys going for gold. Hopefully, I can just keep doing well for South Africa.”

Le Clos, who is still not sure about the races he will compete in, is confident this time around South Africa has a very strong relay team.

“Scotland, I think actually a bit of an experimental year for us. We are swimming a lot of different events this year so not entirely sure what I’m going be swimming until next week. I’m hoping, obviously, to do better than I did four years ago. Hopefully, I can get one or two gold medals and obviously, the relay [will be] really strong,” he added.
