Two hijacking incidents in Witpoortjie

Neighbourhood Watch warns residents to be aware of their surroundings while driving.

Of two hijacking attempts in Witpoortjie between yesterday evening (15 July) and this morning (16 July), one was successful.

An alert resident informed the record of the incidents.

“Last night in Elsenburg Street men attempted to hijack a woman’s vehicle, but the attempt failed.

“However, this morning in McGregor Street a man had pulled out of his driveway and his vehicle was idling when it was stolen.”

The Western Suburbs Roodepoort Neighbourhood Watch could only shed some light on one of the incidents.

“I can’t give complete commentary since we were not aware of the second incident.

“As far as we’re aware, three men had attempted to hijack a woman’s vehicle in Elsenburg Street.

“One of the residents realised what was happening and stopped them by parking behind the vehicle with his light delivery vehicle.

“They fled the scene in a getaway vehicle,” said Johan Willemse, a WSRNW member.

Willemse urged residents to only pull into their driveways once they’re certain that no suspicious characters are lurking around.

It is not certain whether the affected residents had reported the incidents to the Roodepoort police.
