More ammunition for Florida in war against drugs

Father of drug addict sees the need and acts.

The epidemic proportions of the drug problem Florida is well documented and now resident Glenn Fick has added his support to the war against the scourge.

Fick, whose son is battling a drug problem, realised the value that a support group can add to families’ and friends’ battle with loved ones who have fallen prey to addiction.

Along with other residents of the area they have started the faith-based support group Overcomers for Christ.

The group meets every Tuesday at 7pm at Florida Primary in Rose Street.

The group works with two pastors, Rock Boubebe and Calo Lottering and have one-on-one as well as group sessions. They also have a facilitator who concentrates on life skills empowerment, something that soon falls by the wayside in drug addiction.

The group also realised the need for affordable recovery homes and rehab centres, and is partnering with a rehabilitation facility in Pretoria, Victory Outreach, that charges no fees.

The group recently conducted a massive outreach programme on the streets of Florida as well as at the five high schools in the area. Fick says the outreach was a great success in as far as identifying the youth’s desperate cry for help. The outreach culminated in a drama production at Florida Primary last Friday.

Overcomers for Christ is planning another march within the next month.
