Last eliminations before Band Project finals

The My Band Project is almost at its end, which means a new beginning for the winning band.

It all will come down to one round for the eight music acts taking part in the My Band Project at Roodepoort Theatre, says Masim Majiza.

Majiza is the director of Lunika Productions that promotes the My Band Project. The My Band Project seeks to introduce young and upcoming musical acts to the South African music industry. As part of the Project six young bands and six DJs are exposed to workshops with music industry leaders that teach them the business behind making music. Between workshops each band has to give at least one performance in a series of elimination groups – the last of which will be on Saturday 7 June at the Basement Theatre of the Roodepoort Theatre.

The venue is lent to them free of charge, as well as the promotion of their acts. The bands and DJs are not of the same genre, with some metal, pop and afro-jazz in the mix. The diversity means that acts are not judged according to their genre but on their talent and overall performance.

Another music industry workshop will follow the final elimination round on Saturday 28 June. The finals will be held on Saturday 5 July, bringing the project to end for now but awarding the winning band with a cash prize, a demo recording with Shaw Music Studios and the support of the Basement Theatre as the band’s home venue going forward.

On Saturday the musical acts Surdus (metal), Impande Core (Afro-jazz), Solid the Band (contemporary jazz), Uhambo the Journey (Afro-jazz), Figures (pop), TCYIF (pop rock), Motsatsing (Afro-soul) and The Essence (gospel) will be competing for the final slot in the final round.

“The failure of many artists is having the talent without the industry knowledge and I partnered up with a few of my contacts to make this possible,” Majiza said, wishing the group well with the final preparation.

Entrance to the performance of Saturday 7 June costs only R20 per person and tickets can be purchased at the door. For more information contact Nevolan Reddy on 082 560 1201.
