Countdown to Chicken Runners’ Vespa tour 2014

Clock is ticking for Vespa riders tour' for little baby Marco.

The departure date for Roodepoort’s legendary Chicken Runners Vespa tour to Cape Agulhas and back is rapidly drawing closer. The group will depart on 26 April and return on 6 May.

The annual tour sees the group of scooter maniacs raising funds for a good cause. In previous years the Chicken Runners have raised as much as R75 000 for Cansa and children with hearing lost. This year the participants will travel 3 200km on their Vespas and other scooters to raise money for baby Marco Steyn. Little Marco suffers from Krabbe disease, a rare near fatal degenerative disorder that affects the myelin sheath of the nervous system. The disease occurs in approximately one in 100 000 births.

With this disease comes a lot of medical and special-needs expenses such as a special school, physiotherapy and other specialised equipment that he desperately needs.

The aim of the tour is to raise money to help Marco’s parents JC and Martelize Steyn to give Marco a happy childhood.

Although the community has started to open their hearts, wallets and purses the Chicken Runners still need more sponsors, donations and participants in their golf day on 17 April to reach their target of a minimum of R75 000.

Thus far Lexus Security has paid for the full rental of the Ruimsig Golf Course for the golf day, the ‘Biker Church’ has donated R5 000 and the Stingers Motorcycle Club has donated R5 000. DP Printing also has pledged an undisclosed amount.

“We are so thankful towards all the sponsors so far and the guys who bought tickets for our golf day but we definitely need more to make this project a success,” says the Chicken Runner’s treasurer Dewald Muller.

Any member of the public who wants to make a donation, sponsor a rider or participate in the golf day can contact Dewald for info and banking details on 084 555 1503.

The golf day costs R2 000 for a four ball, with lots of prices to be won.
